Singer Olivia Newton-John Is Fighting Her Second Bout of Cancer With the Help of Medical Marijuana

The Grammy winner and “Grease” star is using her fight to help advocate for other Australian patients who don’t have the same intercontinental access that she does.

Four-time Grammy winner and never-ending cult phenomenon Olivia Newton-John recently opened up about her second and latest fight against the destructive forces of cancer. The singer beat breast cancer in the 1990’s, and is now supplementing her battle against a recent relapse with products from her local medical marijuana dispensary.

According to Australia’s News Corp, Newton-John, who spends most of her time at a residence in California, has been using cannabis as a natural addition to radiation and other chemically conceived treatments.

"I use medicinal cannabis, which is really important for pain and healing," The singer said. "It's a plant that has been maligned for so long, and has so many abilities to heal."

But while Newton-John has been able to use her preferred THC or CBD products without issue, her family, friends and countrymen down under don’t have that same opportunity; an unfortunate fact that the “Physical” singer wants to help change. Still fighting the disease, Newton-John will return to Australia this month for an event to promote and fundraise for her self-branded Wellness and Research Center.

"I will do what I can to encourage it. It's an important part of treatment, and it should be available.” Newton-John said. “I use it for the pain and it's also a medicinal thing to do - the research shows it's really helpful."

Australia passed legislation legalizing medical marijuana last year, but the program is extremely restrictive, with plenty of hoops to jump through and rules that vary across different states. Hopefully some newfound activism and fundraising from one of the country’s most famous entertainers will influence a more widespread push for increased access.
