It’s only been six months since Nevada voters approved legislation to legalize recreational cannabis use for adults, and now, in less than 12 hours, the state will make its first non-medical retail marijuana sale. To mark the historic occasion, dispensaries all over the state will open at midnight for cannabis-themed parties with fireworks, freebies and…politicians?

The first legally sold bag of recreational weed won’t go to Wayne Newton, Floyd Mayweather or the guys from Pawn Stars, as Nevada’s first legal weed will be sold to the politician who championed the state’s medical marijuana program and led the push for full-scale legalization and the namesake of the Segerblom Haze strain: Senator Tick Segerblom.

“This day is the culmination of two years of hard work by an army of Nevadans. I’m very proud to be a part of it,” Senator Segerblom said. “It’s going to be a historical day in the history of Las Vegas.”

Despite a lawsuit from the state’s alcohol distributors in Carson City that threatened to delay the early sales roll-out, a host of medical dispensaries across the state will, like stoney-eyed Cinderellas, magically transform into recreational pot shops at the stroke of midnight tonight.

Segerblom will be celebrating tonight at Reef dispensary, a gigantic cultivation site/retail store hybrid located just blocks from the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip, where he will be a headliner of sorts, leading what dispensary owners predict will be a line wrapped around the building.

The Senator and the rest of Sin City’s stoners will have a purchasing limit of one ounce per customer, but that won’t stop them from driving across town, or the state, to other dispensaries holding similar midnight celebrations.

“We are extremely excited to be ushering in the launch of recreational cannabis in Nevada in style,” Reef Dispensaries CEO Matt Morgan said. “As a company, we hope to lead by example so that other markets can follow, laying the groundwork for eventual nationwide legalization.”
