Nearly 40% of American cannabis lovers will be celebrating 4/20 this year by taking the day off of work.

Multistate cannabis operator AYR Wellness unearthed this surprising statistic by conducting a new poll to gain insight into weed lovers’ holiday consumption trends. In partnership with global insights platform Suzy, AYR asked 900 American cannabis consumers aged 21 to 74 how they planned to celebrate this year’s unofficially official cannabis holiday

A solid 39% of respondents said that they were planning to take 4/20 as a personal holiday this year. For some, that means scheduling some paid time off, but for many, that probably means dreaming up some sort of creative excuse to explain why they’re too sick to come into work that day. Fittingly, 42.0% of medical patients also told pollsters that they considered 4/20 to be an important day.

But although a sizable percentage of respondents are planning to spend the day blazing at home, most aren’t planning to smoke more weed than usual. More than two-thirds (71%) said they did not plan to alter their regular cannabis consumption habits on 4/20. About a quarter (23%) did say that they were gearing up to get way more lit than usual this year, though.

AYR also asked respondents to share their overall cannabis consumption preferences. The vast majority of consumers (73%) said they only get high after 5pm, and 47% wait until 10pm to get lit. And for most people, weed smoking is a solitary experience: 78% said that they typically get high alone. Only around 44% of respondents said they were comfortable being stoned in public, interacting with sober people while high, or smoking weed at a gathering where some people are abstaining.

The survey also dug up some interesting details about some popular cannabis products. Grinders may be one of the most ubiquitous weed accessories, but apparently few people use them. Most whole-flower consumers (61%) say they prefer to just break up their bud by hand. OG stoners aged 55 to 74 are even more likely (73%) to use their hands instead of a grinder. Seventy percent of respondents also showed interest in trying out new forms of weed products, like edibles, beverages, or beverage enhancers.

“Our 4/20 survey proves that the unofficial cannabis holiday continues to hold a special place in the hearts of consumers, with nearly 40% planning to take off work to celebrate,” said AYR Wellness CEO and President David Goubert, Forbes reports. “The data also uncovered some compelling findings around how people prefer to consume cannabis – from who they consume with to formats they prefer consuming with.”

Employees of one Massachusetts cannabis company won’t have to worry about coming up with an excuse to call in sick, though. Last month, medical and adult-use dispensary chain Temescal Wellness announced that it would give its employees a paid vacation day this April 20th. That decision is especially bold, given that weed stores generally rake in more cash on 4/20 than on any other day of the year.
