The United Food and Commercial Workers Int'l Union (UFCW) is taking the lead on a unionized cannabis industry with its establishment of the Cannabis Workers Rising project. The UFCW represents more than 1 million workers in the food industry, most of those working in California's food production/retail sector. As cannabis policy continues its rapid passage in states like Washington and Oregon, the UFCW hopes to establish itself as the nascent marijuana industry's primary organized labor institution. Unlike other industries, unions and businesses are joining forces within the cannabis industry, as both have it in their best respective interests to keep the market's momentum and dispensaries up and running. Many cannabis workers view this opportunity as beneficial to the industry as a whole, the establishment of such a union offering a headstart on organization before what is expected to be a very rapid expansion of the industry.
