I’m sure you’ve heard by now that the White House press secretary Sean Spicer denounced recreational cannabis last week.  He promised stricter federal enforcement on recreational cannabis under the Trump administration.  They is appear to be making their first attempt at hurting a major cannabis event, the HIGH TIMES U.S. Cannabis Cup Las Vegas.

The Cannabis Cup is scheduled for this weekend in Nevada and will continue despite an earlier letter from Nevada U.S. Attorney Daniel Bogden to the Moapa Paiute Tribe (owners of the land the cup is being hosted on) warning the event would violate federal law.  The Reno Gazette Journal got the exclusive and the actual letter.

In their official press release last week, High Times, shared that they have consulted with several local officials as well as the Moapa Paiute Tribe in order to run the event compliantly.  High Times is now officially stating “vendors, guests, performers and attendees are advised to comply with applicable law concerning the distribution of cannabis in any amount at the event. In order for the cannabis industry to continue to earn legitimacy and social acceptance, we understand that rules and laws need to be abided.”

In other words, no cannabis at the cannabis cup.

If you are planning to attend, be very careful.  We have already seen the feds arresting vendors and attendees at Hempcon in 2015.  Cannabis was not recreationally legal in the state at that point but has remained federally illegal.

This version of the Cup is the first time High Times is hitting Vegas with this popular event.  They are looking to target the legal cannabis market with many cool aspects planned for the event including but not limited to:

  • Dozens of booths from new and established cannabis companies showcasing their latest products

  • The first cannabis chef competition

  • A cannabis career fair

  • Seminars on concentrates, cultivation, recreational cannabis use, jobs and more

  • It will feature musical performances by J Boog, B Real, Chief Kief, and Ludacris

  • An award ceremony for the Cup winners
