According to a recent Facebook post by Eric “Rabbit” Stolhanske, the whimsical and endearing comedy troupe known as Broken Lizard has finished filming Super Troopers 2. Broken Lizard has delighted fans with several films filled with excessive gut-busting pot jokes and shenanigans, but Super Troopers is considered their crowning achievement. The film's long-awaited sequel has advanced to the post-production stage.
All five troopers that starred in the 2001 original film will return for Super Troopers 2. Those same five have starred in many other Broken Lizard classics such as Club Dread (2004) or Beerfest (2006). Broken Lizard has thrown in a few surprises, including a co-starring role for Rob Lowe. Many parts of the film were shot in or around Boston, Massachussetts. The new film includes scenes at a fictional bordello called L'Explosion.
Broken Lizard initially promised fans that Super Troopers 2 would only be filmed if their Indiegogo Campaign reached $2 million. The campaign reached its goal within 26 hours. Given Broken Lizard's massive pool of loyal fans, the campaign easily surpassed their goal, reaching $4.75M in donations from over 50,000 contributors.
On September 28th, Super Troopers star Paul Soter announced that the film production has shifted into the post-production stage. “Excited to move into the post-production phase of the project and getting this thing closer to being released into the loving arms of the film-going public, Soter said. “Based on the response from our social media blasts, it’s hard not to feel like a bunch of folks are looking forward to it as much as we are.”
The film stars Jay “Thorny” Chandrasekhar who also directed the film. Chandraskhar's fellow Broken Lizard members Foster (Paul Soter), Mac (Steve Lemme), Rabbit (Erik Stolhanske) and of course Farva (Kevin Heffernan.) Lynda “Wonder Woman” Carter will also return for Super Troopers 2.
The original Super Troopers was filmed for a mere $1.2 million yet it grossed $23 million worldwide- the definition of a successful independent comedy. Once the film was picked up by FOX Searchlight Films, Broken Lizard eventually became a household name.
The film is scheduled for release in 2017, so you'll have to wait until then for the moustache ride.
