A proposed bill hopes to reclassify medical marijuana from under the jurisdiction of the Justice Department, leaving the question of legalization up to each individual state. Mainly, the bill addresses a need to reclassify cannabis under the Controlled Substance Act where it remains a Schedule I drug that retains "no medical benefits." The suggested bill hopes to reclassify marijuana as a Schedule II drug, which would qualify it for medical use "but with potential for abuse." While this proposed law may pave the way for medical marijuana, it stops short of Federal legalization of cannabis. However, it is a big step in the right direction for decriminalization and legalization.
