But while most people are doing their best to self-quarantine, police officers across the country are using social distancing regulations to <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/nyc-cops-boast-about-weed-bust-during-pandemic-get-destroyed-by-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>pursue petty arrests<\/u><\/a> and make otherwise unlawful stops and searches.<\/p>\n<p>In Jackson, Mississippi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wlbt.com\/2020\/05\/19\/jpds-operation-safe-street-leads-arrests-seized\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>local NBC station <\/u><u><em>WLBT<\/em><\/u><\/a> reports that police in the city have made 146 arrests that started as social distancing stops, resulting in the seizure of 500 pounds of cannabis and more than $20,000 in cash.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe heavily patrolled the streets and we came across individuals that were together violating the stay at home order,\u201d a Jackson police department spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>But while cops were out looking for groups of people, the police did not report whether officers were wearing masks and making sure to stand at least six-feet-apart themselves. In <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/nypd-cops-violently-attack-brooklyn-man-for-smoking-a-joint-in-a-park\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>New York City<\/u><\/a>, where cops in some neighborhoods are handing out free masks to people who aren\u2019t socially distant, a video from Brooklyn shows a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/05\/04\/video-shows-nypd-using-force-during-social-distancing-arrest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>throng of unmasked cops attacking and arresting a man for being too close to his friends<\/u><\/a>. After the incident, cops said that the arrest was both for breaking social distancing, and <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/cops-are-still-busting-weed-grows-in-the-middle-of-the-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>possession of one joint<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/embed\/gallery\/photos-of-cops-smoking-weed\/photos-of-cops-smoking-weed-2\" ><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When COVID-19-focused social policies were put into place across the country at the beginning of March, <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/cops-are-now-ignoring-low-level-crimes-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>police departments across the states<\/u><\/a>, including in major cities like Philadelphia, told the public that they would be <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/us-cities-are-now-ignoring-minor-drug-crimes-to-prevent-the-spread-of-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>taking a hands-off approach to law enforcement<\/u><\/a>, both for the safety of the public and for officers themselves. In the past few weeks, though, it appears that beachgoers and the like are not the only folks <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/the-nypd-busted-a-pot-party-on-420-for-breaking-social-distancing-orders\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>getting tired of isolation<\/u><\/a>. Cops are seemingly getting restless, and reports of social distancing policing continue to climb.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the violent arrest caught on camera in Brooklyn this past weekend, a spokesperson at the Brooklyn Legal Aid Society <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/05\/04\/video-shows-nypd-using-force-during-social-distancing-arrest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>released a statement to the <\/u><u><em>New York Post<\/em><\/u><\/a> condemning the cops for <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/nyc-cops-boast-about-weed-bust-during-pandemic-get-destroyed-by-the-internet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>continuing to over-police and persecute<\/u><\/a> people in neighborhoods where black and brown people live, while ignoring similar happenings in places like Midtown Manhattan and North Brooklyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSaturday night\u2019s arrest over a marijuana cigarette comes in the context of the NYPD\u2019s pattern of escalating low-level encounters with New Yorkers of color into brutal assaults,\u201d Jennvine Wong, a staff attorney with the Cop Accountability Project at the Legal Aid Society, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/05\/04\/video-shows-nypd-using-force-during-social-distancing-arrest\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>said to the <\/u><u><em>New York<\/em><\/u> <u><em>Post<\/em><\/u><\/a>. \u201cThis misconduct is unconscionable at any time but especially egregious in the midst of a pandemic where each person-to-person contact risks exacerbating the spread COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Zach Harris on <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/potczach?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em>Twitter<\/em><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While some police departments have publicized a hands-off approach to minor crimes during the pandemic, others have used stay-at-home orders to pursue petty arrests, including pot possession.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":51425,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3036],"tags":[],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.5 -
