But he currently stands to make even more millions from marijuana, despite opposing weed legalization for the entirety of his 24-year career in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/06\/03\/us\/politics\/john-boehner-marijuana-cannabis.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em>New York Times<\/em><\/u><\/a> report, Boehner owns 625,000 shares in Acreage Holdings, a cannabis investment firm that bankrolls legal pot operations in 14 states. He joined the board at Acreage last year, just two years after retiring from Congress.<\/p>\n<p>In May, Acreage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2019-05-23\/acreage-shareholder-cresco-supports-canopy-deal-amid-opposition\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>announced a deal<\/u><\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/culture\/snoop-dogg-tweed-stock-rise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Canopy Growth<\/u><\/a>, the world\u2019s largest cannabis company. The deal basically sells Acreage off to Canopy for over $3 billion \u2014 but only after the US federally legalizes weed. Acreage\u2019s investors will receive an additional $300 million once the deal is finalized. The sale is expected to value Canopy at $18 billion.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: Politicians Who&#8217;ve Puffed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"640\" height=\"430\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/embed\/gallery\/politicians-whove-puffed\/1\" ><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>How much, exactly, would Boehner make once Acreage sells to Canopy? That\u2019s unclear, but based on <a href=\"https:\/\/seekingalpha.com\/article\/4259671-canopy-growth-steal-acreage-deal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>details from the deal<\/u><\/a>, his earnings would likely, at a minimum, be around $17 million.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/former-house-speaker-marijuana-foe-john-boehner-set-make-millions-cannabis-legalization-1442067\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em>Newsweek<\/em><\/u><\/a>, Boehner has worked diligently to convince US lawmakers to reform the nation\u2019s cannabis laws since he joined Acreage.
