{"id":45798,"date":"2019-06-04T16:04:07","date_gmt":"2019-06-04T16:04:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/oregon-bans-landlords-from-denying-housing-to-renters-for-prior-weed-offenses\/"},"modified":"2019-06-04T16:04:07","modified_gmt":"2019-06-04T16:04:07","slug":"oregon-bans-landlords-from-denying-housing-to-renters-for-prior-weed-offenses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/merryjane.com\/news\/oregon-bans-landlords-from-denying-housing-to-renters-for-prior-weed-offenses\/","title":{"rendered":"Oregon Bans Landlords From Denying Housing to Renters for Prior Weed Offenses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Oregon\u2019s legislature passed a housing bill that prevents landlords from discriminating against tenants over cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Late last week, the state legislature approved <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.oregonlive.com\/bill\/2019\/SB970\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>SB 970<\/u><\/a>, which bans landlords from denying housing to renters with prior, minor cannabis convictions. The bill also bans landlords from denying housing or evicting medical marijuana patients who comply with state laws.<\/p>\n<p>SB 970 clarified existing legislation which only allows landlords to deny applicants convicted of crimes that could \u201cnegatively affect the rental property or others living there,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oregonlive.com\/politics\/2019\/06\/legislature-bans-landlords-from-using-prior-marijuana-convictions-to-reject-renters.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u><em>Oregon Live<\/em><\/u><\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>One of the most prominent opponents of SB 970 is Rental Housing Alliance Oregon, an organization that represents the state\u2019s landlords. The alliance opposed the bill on grounds that it forced landlords to \u201cignore convictions others can consider is wrong,\u201d wrote Ron Garcia, the organization\u2019s legislative chair, to the Senate Housing Committee.<\/p>\n<p>SB 970 does not impose limits or restrictions on smoking fees for rental properties.<\/p>\n<p>Renters with prior weed convictions may get additional help if SB 420, which is currently being discussed in the House, becomes law.
