On Thursday, the athlete publicly declared that he will no longer play for a league that does not respect his right to consume the plant medicinally.<\/p>\n<p>Irving, who has is currently serving an indefinite suspension for violating the league\u2019s substance abuse policy \u2014 the third such suspension of his career \u2014 announced his decision to fans through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/david_irving95\/?hl=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Instagram Live<\/u><\/a>. In the video, he described the hypocrisy of NFL doctors prescribing dangerous pharmaceuticals while chastising cannabis \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sc4_Iq0Zy78\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>all while Irving puffed away on a joint<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, basically guys, I quit. They want to talk about suspension and all this other nonsense; I\u2019m outta there. I\u2019m not doing this shit no more,\u201d Irving <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TampaBayTre\/status\/1103861610882334721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1103861610882334721&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fbleacherreport.com%2Farticles%2F2824480-video-watch-david-irving-say-he-quits-football-while-appearing-to-smoke-weed\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>told fans in the lengthy selfie video<\/u><\/a>. \u201cSome people are like \u2018oh you\u2019re addicted to weed,\u2019 but shit, if I\u2019m going to be addicted to something, I\u2019d rather it be marijuana, which is medicine&#8230; rather than the Xanax bars or the hydros or the seroquel that they feed you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sc4_Iq0Zy78\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Irving discussed his issues with the league\u2019s unfair pay structure, and the institutionalized racism that led to the blackballing of quarterback Colin Kaepernick. He then questioning why athletes in other professional sports, coaches in professional sports, or Hollywood actors don\u2019t get chastised for cannabis use, while NFL players face threats to their livelihoods if they test positive for pot.<\/p>\n<p>And save the occasional NBA suspension, Irving is absolutely right. In a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nhl\/story\/_\/id\/26046596\/is-nhl-future-marijuana-pro-sports-why-be\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>long-read published by <\/u><u><em>ESPN<\/em><\/u><\/a>, it\u2019s detailed just how prevalent \u2014 and normalized \u2014 marijuana use is in the NHL, including one player openly admitting to hitting a vape pen after every game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone questions my commitment to football, but let\u2019s get it straight here and now, I love football,\u201d Irving said on his live stream. \u201cHowever, I don\u2019t love the NFL. The NFL is not football. What y\u2019all see us do \u2014 the game and shit \u2014 that\u2019s only 20% of all the shit we have to go through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" width=\"640\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TampaBayTre\/status\/1103862483645808640\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe got this opioid thing going on and I\u2019m prescribed all that bullshit, and I just think it\u2019s bullshit that we\u2019ve got to deal with that policy,\u201d Irving continued. \u201cEveryone thinks it\u2019s about smoking weed. It\u2019s not about smoking weed. It\u2019s much bigger than that. Much, much bigger. Hell, I have concussions every day. I get to see around the office how that fucks your head up and I feel it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NFL currently bans all forms of cannabis, and disciplines players with fines and suspensions if they test positive for THC. League officials have expressed willingness to rework those policies in the future \u2014 with recent rumors indicating that rule changes might be coming soon.
