Anyone who has briefly considered going to film school has seen, or at least heard tale of, The Room. The 2003 cult classic, written, directed, and produced by Hollywood outsider Tommy Wiseau, gives Trolls 3 a run for its money for title of worst movie ever.

Distributors A24 and James Franco, who formerly teamed up for Spring Breakers and The Adderall Diaries, are now shining a spotlight on what many call the Citizen Kane of shitty movies.

Franco, who co-produced and directs The Disaster Artist, appears as Wiseau, a character who, if he was not real, critics would likely label as absolutely unbelievable, in his quest to somehow get “The Room” made. Dave Franco also stars in the movie as Wiseau's friend and co-star, Greg Sestero.

The film is based on Sestero’s memoir, also titled The Disaster Artist, co-written by Tom Bissell. The memoir depicts the hardships of making a movie where the creator was known for rewriting scenes as they were filming, destroying sets only to have them rebuilt the next day, and where a budget of $6 million was made to look like $6.

Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Zac Efron, Josh Huterson, Jacki Weaver, Ari Graynor and Jason Mantzoukas round out the cast.

The trailer itself is full of bizarre moments that only scrape the surface of just how strange and mysterious Wiseau truly is — including a sex scene that is featured in the movie that shows Wiseau possibly trying to penetrate his lead actress’s belly button. (We’ve all been there, am I right ladies?)

The Disaster Artist has already earned praise after its rough cut was shown at SXSW in Austin, Texas, and more recently at the Toronto Film Festival, where the final cut premiered.

Wiseau, who originally wanted Johnny Depp to portray him, even gave his stamp of approval on the movie, telling Franco that it was nearly perfect other than some of the lighting at the beginning of the film.

Meanwhile, if you’re wondering just how truly terrible The Room could possibly be, you’re in luck, as the DVD of this masterpiece can now be purchased directly from Wiseau. As an added bonus, you can even acquire three pairs of Tommy Wiseau underwear with your copy (which the auteur has designed himself!) for only $22.99.

The Disaster Artist will open as a limited release on December 1, and nationwide on December 8.
