Every year complaints about marijuana-fueled cookie sales create headlines, but a new rule will give Girl Scouts in Colorado explicit permission to sell treats outside pot stores.

For at least five years now, Girl Scout cookies have been nearly synonymous with cannabis. Of course, there’s the popular strain, its legal issues and aptly named genetic crosses, but there also exists an almost inescapable connection between legal weed dispensaries and girls in vests hawking Tagalongs, Thin Mints, and Peanut Butter Patties to their stoned customers.

And while headlines about entrepreneurial Scouts pulling wagons full of cookies to local dispensaries have gone viral nearly once a year since legal pot shops first opened in California and Colorado, the Girl Scouts of America (GSA) have either turned a blind eye or attempted a slap on the wrist against those ingenuitive salesgirls, until now. According to a scoop from the Cannabist, the GSA’s Colorado chapter has implemented a new policy allowing Scouts to sell outside of pot shops as they would at any grocery store or movie theater.

“(Potential cookie sales) sites are now all treated the same, and approval of those sites is contingent on whether they meet our guidelines and safety requirements,” Colorado Girl Scout spokeswoman Anne Marie Harper told the Cannabist. “Safety is the biggest concern.”

Like all Girl Scout Cookie sales locations, dispensary sales setups would have to be approved by the Girl Scouts of Colorado, but there no longer exists any ban on stands outside of “adult-oriented” businesses like pot dispensaries, liquor stores, and casinos.

But while that settles things for 420-friendly girl scouts and lifted Do-Si-Dos fans in the Centennial State, this year’s most-shared dispensary cookie sales story comes from San Diego, California, where the intersection of dispensaries and Girl Scouts is not quite as clear.

Earlier this month, one impressive Scout sold over 300 boxes of sweets outside a local pot shop, using the dispensary’s social media pages as advertising. Because she stayed on the sidewalk and used a wagon to peddle her goods instead of a folding table, the still-unnamed baked goods boss was able to avoid breaking any Golden State Scout rules, but who knows, maybe she’ll take things on the road next year and set up a few pop-up cookie stands around Denver’s pot shops.
