Massachusetts Smoke Shop Busted for Selling CBD Edibles

Retail sales of recreational marijuana will not be legal in Massachusetts until next year.

A smoke shop in Taunton, Massachusetts was busted by local police this week for selling CBD edibles. Police were tipped off to the illegal sales by a do-gooder who purchased a bag of CBD-infused “apple belts” gummies and brought them into the local police department accompanied by a receipt. Two detectives from the Taunton Street Crimes Unit, who handle narcotics offenses, gang activity, and vice crimes, visited the smoke shop earlier this week to investigate.

Detective Sgt. Matthew Skwarto said that he found at least 20 different varieties of CBD edibles and oils offered up for sale in the smoke shop. The police seized the products, and warned store manager Vinny Patel to stop selling the items. According to Skwarto, Patel was cooperative, and assured the police he would no longer sell cannabis products without a license.

Voters approved a ballot measure legalizing recreational marijuana in the state last month, but business licenses to sell cannabis products at retail establishments will probably not be issued until next year.

Patel isn’t the first Massachusetts entrepreneur to jump the gun on legal weed sales - storefront clubs and delivery companies have already kickstarted the recreational use cannabis economy by offering bud as a “gift” in exchange for steep cover fees or delivery charges.

Even though the CBD edibles that Patel sold are not psychoactive, they still contain a cannabis derivative, and cannot be sold in retail establishments until Massachusetts sorts out its retail regulations.
