Gorilla Glue #4 is a Serious Contender to Beat Blue Dream As 2017’s Best Selling Strain

Which genetics will rule this year’s grow houses, dispensaries and bowl packs?

When cannabis data and market research firm BDS Analytics starting tracking the sales of over 3,000 cannabis strains, they found that sativa hybrid Blue Dream was the king of the cannabis hill. Every month since February 2014, Blue Dream remained the top seller in Colorado dispensaries. When recreational marijuana was legalized in Washington in July of the same year, there was Blue Dream, once again flying off the shelves.

All throughout 2015, Blue Dream remained a top seller, but a challenger was slowly but surely gaining ground. Last year, the potent hybrid known as Gorilla Glue #4 muscled its way to #1 in Oregon, selling almost $7.5 million worth of bud, while Blue Dream only sold around $6.5 million.

In Colorado and Washington, Gorilla Glue #4 didn’t even crack the top ten list until January of 2016. But by the fall, it had hit the number 2 spot in both states' sales reports. Overall, among all sales channels in Colorado, Washington, and Oregon, Gorilla Glue #4 was the second-best seller in 2016, with $24 million in sales vs. Blue Dream's $49 million.

Continuing west towards California, the strain sales demographics remained largely the same, but it appears that California smokers are getting a little tired of Blue Dream. According to California’s most popular medical marijuana delivery service, Eaze, Gorilla Glue #4 took over the top selling spot in 2016, with Blue Dream falling from #1 in 2015 to last year’s eighth best seller. Check out the chart below to see Eaze’s full list of 2016 best sellers.

All in all, it looks like Gorilla Glue #4 is poised to be a strong contender for 2017’s most popular strain - with an opportunity to finally knock Blue Dream off the top spot.
