The Colorado Department of Transportation has reported that the number of citations for driving under the influence of marijuana dropped by 33.2% in the first quarter of 2017, compared to the first quarter of 2016. The Colorado State Patrol reported that only 155 people were cited for pot-impaired driving between January and March of this year, compared to 232 cited during the same months of last year. The number of citations for DUIs involving both alcohol and marijuana also declined from 69 in the first quarter of 2016 to 50 this year.

In a survey conducted by the CDOT, 55% of marijuana users said they believed it was totally safe to drive while stoned. “There’s a lot of troubling information we’ve collected and many marijuana users indicate they drive high and they don’t think it’s a danger,” said CDOT spokesman Sam Cole. “We’re still troubled by fact that marijuana users are still telling us they routinely drive high. "We’re pleased with the awareness, but we’re not so pleased with the behaviors that are actually happening.”

As the state prepares for 4/20 festivities, Colorado authorities are encouraging drivers not to drive under the influence. “Take the high road this 4/20, and don’t DUI!” a release from CSP reads.

“The Colorado State Patrol will be in full force this 4/20 week encouraging the public to get a safe ride home and not drive impaired.” The CDOT has partnered with ride-sharing companies like Lyft to offer discounted rides for Thursday's celebrations.
