FBI Reignites Clinton Email Server Scandal a Week Before the Election

The latest twist in this scandalous election features a new batch of emails found on the computer of former U.S. Representative Anthony Weiner.

Just when it seemed like Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton was on her way to a clearcut November 8 victory over Donald Trump, another controversy arises to make the country question the awfulness of this election. In a time where her opposition has seemingly self-combusted by alienating and offending the entire female and minority population, Hillary should be skipping gleefully to the finish line. But instead, just days before the election, she is now faced with another obstacle, as the FBI has discovered a new slew of emails pertaining to the infamous Clinton server.

The FBI discovered thousands of emails on the computer of former U.S Rep Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton’s closest aide Huma Abedin, currently under federal investigation for sending dick pics to a 15-year-old girl. According to NPR, the emails appear to come from a laptop that Weiner and Abedin sometimes shared, and investigators have theorized that it may have been used for some correspondence that could be related to the State Department.

This discovery was publicly disclosed last week when FBI Director James Comey decided to send a letter to Congress alerting them of their discovery, a decision that has been met with criticism on all fronts. Not knowing the full nature of what this reopened email investigation will unearth, and with the election looming closely, Comey decided it would be in the best interest for everyone involved to share the news without hesitation. He wrote the following letter to Congress:

"We don't ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record. At the same time, however, given that we don't know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails, I don't want to create a misleading impression. In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood, but I wanted you to hear directly from me about it."

A number of governmental figureheads have come out to criticize Comey for stirring up speculation about Clinton’s innocence less than two weeks from the election. Former Attorney General Eric Holder recently condemned the FBI Director for “violating longstanding policies and traditions”, and has called on him to fix his drastic mistake. The typical protocol usually entails the FBI and Justice Department working in tandem in situations like this, but Comey decided to go against Attorney General Loretta Lynch's recommendation to not release the new information. Tennessee Rep. Steve Cohen took his dissent a step further and called on Comey to step down from his position.

The matter has created an extremely tough situation for Comey, who is reportedly “very conscious” of the disagreement within the FBI over their decision to not prosecute Clinton back in July. On the other hand, he’s receiving a fierce outpour of dissent from the Justice Department and Democrats for reopening the Pandora’s box of this election. Clinton herself has urged the FBI to release more information and explain the facts, while Trump has been likening the political scandal to Watergate.

All in all, Comey’s decision to disclose the newly discovered information found on Weiner and Abedin’s laptop can be seen as dangerously stirring up the pot or refreshingly honest. Like most of the polarizing issues that have arisen this election year, it really all depends on what side you are on.
