Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue. That pretty much sums up the new track from Taylor Gang co-conspirators Wiz Khalifa and Ty Dolla $ign, “Something New.”

The old thing: A beat that either mimics or samples Zapp & Roger’s classic “Computer Love,” which was also famously sampled by 2Pac on “Thug Passion.”

The new thing(s): Updated production from Hitmaka (AKA Yung Berg), a lyrical reference to the relatively recent “Platinum with no features” meme, and the fact that “Something New” is, at the time of writing, just around 12 hours old.

The borrowed thing: Ad-libs that either mimic Travi$ Scott or are actually delivered by Travi$ Scott. If the latter’s true, he’s uncredited, but the resemblance is uncanny.

The blue thing: This is pure conjecture, but the blue thing is Blue Dream, which was perhaps smoked in the studio during the making of “Something New.” Perhaps fellow Taylor Gang member Juicy J, a noted fan of the strain, provided it. After all, even Wiz can’t smoke Khalifa Kush all the time. Right? He couldn’t possibly.

Now that we’ve exhausted that wedding day cliché, let’s talk about “Something New” being the latest in a string of tracks in which Wiz and Ty bring out the best in each other. Most recently, there was “What You Like,” a song by another frequent collaborator of theirs, singer 24hrs. In 2014, there was “Or Nah,” which played a major role in popularizing both Ty Dolla $ign and the phrase “Or nah” (as in, “Can you really take dick, or nah?”). Most importantly, there was their joint Talk About it in the Morning EP, which housed the amazing, psychedelic track “Refresh/Say No More,” which got an even more amazing remix from L-VIS.

There’s no word yet if “Something New” will be included on Ty’s upcoming Beach House 3, Wiz’s next project, or if it’s just a loosie.
