Lower Dens Get Nostalgic In “Real Thing” Video

There's a thin line between love And desire.

Baltimore’s Lower Dens, who haven’t blessed us with any new music since their 2015 release Escape From Evil, shared their new single “The Real Thing” in the form of a glitzy retro video. Escape From Evil marked their third full length record, following 2010’s Twin-Hand Movement and 2012’s Nootropics.

“The Real Thing,” co-written by Arthur Bates, with additional production provided by pop producer extraordinaire Ariel Rechtshaid, and directed by SSION (not for the first time) is heavily tinged both sonically and visually in deep melancholy.

Heavy synths, downtempo rhythm and lush vocals create the musical landscape, while hazy red tinted lighting gives the images some grain, while seeming polished and staged (in a retro 80s’ way) at the same time thanks to soft-focus camerawork. Visually, it features frontwoman Jana Hunter singing and playing guitar against a black background (sometime in double, think awkward family photos) intercut with scenes of people dancing.

The melancholy vibe is also featured prominently in the lyrics. The song, Hunter explained, was inspired by a woman writing in to an advice column who seemed “genuinely torn between her love for her husband and her desire to fuck around," a concept which she (and plenty of others, whether they’ll admit it or not) find very relatable.

No album title or release date has been announced of yet, but watch “The Real Thing” here and when it does release it will be via Ribbon.
