Your Own Canna Cafe: 2 Ways to Make Cannabis Infused Coffee

Wake up in the morning with this infused coffee recipe.

There’s always more than one way to skin a cat. Of course, in order to get the energy and motivation to do something that weird, you’ll probably need some coffee and cannabis first. When I was first introduced to the “hippie speedball” while living at an intentional community and farm in Colorado, I had no idea how much my love for combining coffee and cannabis would grow. What started off as a joint and a cup of coffee at 6 a.m. has become a near obsession.

And oh, how this obsession has grown.

When I started writing Wake & Bake: a cookbook, I began dreaming of all of the different ways I could put these two things together. I’ve made six versions of creamers and have infused hot coffee with cannabis honey tincture. I make a mean cannabis infused coffee cake and have too many Pipe Mugs to count. I have recently fallen in love with a iced canna-coffee shake that puts anything ever made in a coffee house to shame.

As a health-minded person, I know that both the obsession and the caffeine dependence aren’t something to be proud of. Unfortunately, I’m not ready to let go of the obsession bit. So instead, I’d like to share with you a ridiculously healthy method for Low-Acid Cannabis-Infused Bulletproof Coffee. It’s not only an incredible way to wake and bake, it is also paleo, vegan and easy on your digestive system.

Low Acid Cold Brew Coffee

I first came across the idea for low acid coffee in Healing With Whole Foods and tried it the very next day. At the time, I had no idea that cold brew and low acid coffee were the same thing, but they are. I thought that for some reason the health gods had delivered a way for me to continue to drink coffee guilt-free and was clueless to the fact that I’d had cold brew coffee on many occasions and just didn’t know that it was “good for you”.

It takes a tiny bit of planning ahead to make a cold brew coffee concentrate and you can make a week’s worth overnight. I like to make a strong brew with a ratio of 2:1 water to coffee grounds and then add hot or cold water to it throughout the week. You’ll figure out what you like best after a few tries.

  1. In a large ceramic bowl or 1/2 gallon mason jar, mix: 4 Cups Room Temperature Water 2 Cups Coursly Ground Organic Coffee
  2. Let the coffee mixture sit for at least 12 hours. I like it best after 24 hours, but if you’re impatient, you can pour a little off after 12 and let the rest chill for longer.
  3. Strain the coffee through a filter or a mesh strainer. Store the concentrate in the refrigerator.

Bulletproof Coffee with Cannabis

And now... the fun part! Bulletproof coffee is traditionally made with butter, so if you have some cannabutter on hand and you’d like to use that, feel free. I prefer using cannabis infused coconut oil because of the high MCT content. MCT digests quickly, allowing the cannabinoids to enter your bloodstream faster and creates a less “peaky” experience. In my opinion, this dairy-free version of bulletproof coffee tastes better as well.

  1. In a blender, combine:
    1. 1-2 Tablespoons Cold Brew Concentrate (more or less to taste)
    2. 3/4-1 Cup of Boiling Water
    3. 1 teaspoon - 1 Tablespoon Cannabis Infused Coconut Oil
    4. 2-3 Tablespoons Coconut Milk
  2. Sweeten to taste with organic stevia or local honey and serve immediately.
