The stoner community has lost a good one. In an interview with Vulture, Woody Harrelson admitted to reporters that, after 30 years of active use, the Academy Award nominee has officially quit smoking marijuana - for now.
Harrelson was meeting with reporters to promote his new movie, Wilson, but after a few questions about the role and his tour bus he likes to call “The Mothership," the Vulture interview quickly turned to more pressing topics, namely the most popular misconceptions about Harrelson, which led the actor to discuss his recent choice to abstain from smoking weed.
“They think I’m a party animal, which … I am a party animal. I mean, that might be one thing. But I am a party animal. But on the other hand, I haven’t … I’m now extremely moderate and … I actually stopped smoking pot almost a year ago.”
Everyone’s favorite hemp-enthusiast continued, telling the reporter that he stopped smoking partly because it made him less productive, but mostly because he just needed to slow down on the partying.
“Just 30 solid years of just partying too fucking hard.” The actor said.
Quitting anything cold turkey after three decades of habit-forming is quite a task, and despite his ability to bowl with a rubber hand, Woody is not immune to temptation.
“Last night, someone had — not just good herb but sativa; really good sativa. There’s a joint, and beautifully rolled. I like a beautifully rolled … and I just was like, I mean, I’ve gone this long. It would be weird to just be like, ‘Okay, let me have a hit off that,’ and then suddenly go back to smoking too much, which is … I don’t have a problem at all with smoking. I think it’s great...I feel like it was keeping me from being emotionally available.”
Luckily, the lack of THC hasn’t gone to Woody’s head. Despite the year-long hiatus, Vulture journalist interviewing Harrelson reported that the actor still, talks and acts like the stoner we all know and love.
“Harrelson spoke in between long pauses, stretching his words like taffy and squinting his eyes to ponder each point he made.”
Yup - ganja or not - that’s still our guy.
