@WhereYouSmoke sprouted in a moment shared between a spliff and the great outdoors. Run by an anonymous artist who grew up in LA, the Instagram account and online platform celebrates cannabis lovers who like to light up alongside Mother Nature.

Each week, we've asked @WhereYouSmoke to share a few favorite Instagram uploads with MERRY JANE, and so far it's been nothing but picturesque snaps and chill-ass stories to boot.

For this week's edition of our photo column, we're featuring Sicilian stoners, Pompei potheads, and Tuscan tokers. Yup — we're doing Where You Smoke: Italy Edition. Get yourself a plate of gnocchi, some nice bud, and a side of gelato before diving into the interviews with these Italian outdoor smoking enthusiasts. And first peep this anecdote @WhereYouSmoke wanted to share:

One summer, I was visiting Italy with my dad and some friends. After about a week between Rome and Venice, we headed out to Modena for a few days. Thankfully we'd grabbed a decent amount of bud in Venice, and Modena had the best food of the entire trip — the oldest, most authentic balsamic vinegar; every mouthwatering flavor of the most delicious gelato in the world; the freshest mozzarella I've ever seen, let alone tasted.

Our final stop of the trip was Santa Maddalena, an incredibly small, quaint town in the Italian Alps. I'm talking a few street lights on past 8PM — small and quaint, but with monstrous, majestic mountains in all directions. It was outrageously beautiful, and we were also incredibly grateful to have copped so much grass on our way there.

One day, we decided to head to a neighboring town to explore and get lunch. Before leaving, my friends and I wandered out into the massive, forest-green field surrounding the town to smoke a few spliffs. We ended up getting far more faded than expected, and the walk back to the car was pretty surreal. I've never been surrounded by such striking beauty, before or since.

Driving to the next town, I was in the front seat with my dad, and my two friends were in the backseat. We were all so clearly high, laughing and remarking at every single thing we saw out the window. Suddenly, my dad slammed on the brakes, and we all jolted forward. Out the windshield was a herd of the most quintessential beige cows that populate the Alps. They were all wearing bells around their neck; it was straight out of "The Sound of Music." We all stared in utter disbelief at what is still to the this day the most vivid memory I have. Practically on cue, we all burst into laughter, sitting there watching this entire herd of cows lamp and lie around the road as tiny Italian cars inched their way around them. We all were laughing hysterically and soaking in the most outrageous, incredible, unforgettable moment.

All interviews have been edited for length and clarity.

@WhereYouSmoke: Where was this photo taken?
@dailytokeratl:
We arrived by train from Cinque Terre. My wife and friends surprised me with a quick trip to Pisa. At the beginning of our trip, they told me that we didn't have time and the distance was too far to go to Pisa.

You spark up in a lot of different places. What's something you always try to do when you get to a new destination?
I love getting faded before an adventure! Wake n Bake, eat a small bite, bake some more, go sight-seeing, hiking, shopping, eating, see a show of some sort… and bake some more. Microdosing edibles throughout the day is quite wonderful, as well. But first, we try our best to find local food. I'm half Thai and somehow I always find Thai food when I'm traveling, but my go-to is usually Pizza.

Ever gotten caught smoking while abroad?
Never. Knock on wood. #keepitonthelow #dontkillmyvibe. Shout out @710kingpen!

How were your fellow smokers in Italy?
European people are super chill already... Italian stoners are super friendly, welcoming, and hospitable. They blaze a lot of hash and roll spliffs.

@WhereYouSmoke: Where was this photo taken?
@floppyfvckinggoober:
My friends and I took a backpacking trip through Northern Italy and down to the miraculously blue waters of Liguria. This photo was taken on a coastal hiking trail between the picturesque town of Portofino and the monastery of San Fruttuoso, when we sat down to relax after hiking for three hours.

So you hit up the Alps… what was that like?
While weather in Switzerland was rather rough and rainy, we encountered summer-like temperatures and blue skies south of the Alps. We were having lots of fun throughout the day, messing around, having a few smoke seshes, just exploring the coastline around Portofino. We were staying the nights in our sleeping bags, only traveling by train and with our heavy backpacks.

What's your favorite munchies snack?
My favorite high snack is definitely pizza (stereotypical, I know). In Italy — no doubt the best place in the world to eat pizza — I again noticed how satisfying pizza is when you're blazed.

How does weed enhance your life?
Smoking makes me feel more connected to my environment. I'm aware of all the beautiful things around me. I can lay back, enjoy some nice food, just follow my thoughts, have nice conversations. Also, I've gotten to know so many nice new people through smoking.

@WhereYouSmoke: Where was this photo taken?
@oscar_pischeddu:
I took this photo in Caorle, a Italian beautiful town out by the water. We were 20km above the water at Jesolo beach, smoking as the sun set.

What was the weed culture like out in an Italian beach town?
Not many people smoke. The weed culture in Italy is on the low because not many people are serious smokers. I did see some teenagers smoking though!

Any other dope places you've blazed in Italy?
The best place I've smoked weed in Italy is Sardegna (Sardinia). Smoking while surrounded by the beaches, the water, the caves… I think it's the most beautiful place in the world.
