Since the legalization of marijuana, many ideologists have discussed various ways to make the industry even bigger, including the need for a social space where smoking cannabis would be acceptable.
Though this “new” idea seems to be slowly making ground in America, Amsterdam has caught on quickly. Amsterdam has established a legal way for social cannabis consumption with their “coffeeshops.” According to I Amsterdam, coffeeshops are “alcohol-free establishments where soft drugs are sold and consumed.” Though this sounds similar to our dispensaries, Amsterdam coffeeshops allow you to consume your purchased cannabis within the store.
The video offers an inside look into the inner workings of one of these coffeeshops. Similar to a dispensary, a customer chooses a strain and makes their purchase. However, aside from an American dispensary, the customer can lounge inside the coffee shop and smoke, vape, eat or drink their cannabis among friends.
As a tourist, you are more than welcome to participate in this social activity if you are 18 and above. If you’re planning on buying massive amounts of marijuana, think again. Amsterdam coffee shops allow a maximum amount of 5 grams a day. It is acceptable to consume cannabis in the home in Amsterdam, but purchasing marijuana outside of a coffee shop is strictly illegal.
