It's a common scenario: you've settled in for the night when, all of a sudden, you realize you're out of herb or rolling papers. If only there was a service that delivered these things right to your door. Well, lucky for you, innovation and competitiveness in the emerging marijuana market have led to a new kind of start up, one that focuses on cannabis subscription box services. Now, you can have your favorite strains, accessories and more delivered right to your doorstep. With multiple businesses in the same playing field, you get to decide which one suits your specific needs while also making sure you’re getting your money’s worth—win-win. Read on to find out what one works best for you so you can make an informed decision when signing up.

Potbox

Potbox is one of the first marijuana subscription services to garner a flurry of public attention. The company, which was founded in San Francisco and currently only serves medical marijuana users in the state of California, specializes in all natural, ethical cannabis. For a modest $149.99 per month, you get 10 grams (.35 oz) – split into two jars of about 4g each and two pre-rolls of 1g of either a hybrid, indica or sativa strain and two pre-rolled wax joints. They’re also all accompanied by cards with lab results that describe the THC, CBD and other chemical levels of each strain. It’s important to know what you’re consuming, especially when you’re dealing with medicinal marijuana rather than recreational. Considering half an ounce normally costs around $100, you’re getting a pretty great deal. The downside? It’s only available in California and is strictly medicinal, so unless you have a green card, you’ll get the red light when trying to subscribe.

PufferBox

Right off the bat, the major downside to PufferBox in comparison to Potbox is that there's no actual cannabis in this box. Actually, no other subscription service is offering cannabis quite yet since doing so is a legal gray area that many companies don’t want to operate in. For $23-25 per month, PufferBox offers you five to eight medium quality cannabis-related products. Whether it’s a snack for post-cannabis consumption or a small bong or grinder, you’ll receive fun new products to try out the next time you're enjoying the herb. The perk of this is that unlike Potbox, you can subscribe from anywhere in the United States. However, you really don’t know what you’re getting until it comes to your door, and as such, a subscription over several months might result in multiple types of the same kind of marijuana paraphernalia that you don’t really want or need piling up in your home.

You can think of 420 Goody Box as a higher quality PufferBox. They offer two tiers of subscriptions: their Goody Box that’s comparable to Pufferbox at prices around $25 per month and a Top Shelf Box that goes for around $85 a month. 420 Goody Box offers what look like superior quality products in their normal subscription and you still receive five to eight items. The difference? While some months these products blow PufferBox out of the water, other months offer basically the exact same things. This means your money might be better spent with the Top Shelf Box because you’re guaranteed to receive over $300 dollars worth of goods in each box at a cost of less than $100. That’s a deal you can’t turn down! Past boxes have included snacks, vaporizers, quality containers and even a four-piece grinder. If you’re new to cannabis and don’t have any smoking materials, this would be the perfect way to get you started without having to make a huge investment upfront. Plus, there's always a monthly theme, which can finally make checking the mail exciting again.

While cannabis subscription services exist, the industry needs to expand its services to better accommodate recreational smokers—and fast. Companies such as Marvina, another cannabis subscription service much like Potbox, are closing down due to low sales and weak expansion plans, so your choices are rather limited as of now. However, subscription services are expanding in many industries, as is the legalization of marijuana, so hopefully this means cannabis boxes will be able to keep pace with consumer demand moving forward.
