Who would have thought  at the beginning of the year that the legendary Australian electronic group The Avalanches would be dropping top-notch tunes again in 2016. After years or rumors and hints, it actually came true. Prior to dropping their latest album Wildflower in July, it had been a longwinded 16 years since the elusive band released any new music. But even with the lengthy hiatus, The Avalanches were able to produce a wildly eclectic album capable of living up to their fans' high expectations. 

After dropping a trippy animated visual for the track “Subways” back in August, The Avalanches are once again using the New York City subway station as a location for their latest music video for “Because I’m Me”, the opening track on the album Wildflower. The song itself sounds like a new-age version of Jackson 5, and is filled to the brim with joyous horns and dance-infused rhythms. The track features a couple of smooth verses from Sonny Cheeba, known best as one-half of the Bronx-based hip hop duo Camp Lo.   

Known for their eccentric and unpredictable visuals, the Australian group’s feel-good album opener is set to the journey of a young city kid trying to impress an MTA booth attendant with his smooth dance moves. The video, directed by Greg Brunkalla, explores the depths of young love that can be found underneath the city streets.

After getting turned down by the cute MTA employee, the determined kid starts serenading her in the subway station, and is soon joined by a dancing horn section and the slick-spitting rapper Sonny Cheeba.

By the end of the video, the young kid transforms into an inflatable heart, but still, the apple of his eye doesn’t seem to be impressed. The Avalanches' latest album Wildflower is available now via Astralwerks, and they will be reissuing their critically acclaimed and long out-of-print album Since I Left You on January 27.
