You know the saying, “good things come in threes?” Well, sorry to burst your bubble here ladies and gents, but that’s a total lie. The fact of the matter is, it’s all about twos. There’s a historical record of pairs throughout time that have proven to dominate above all else. Let’s look at food: Peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and meatballs, steak and potatoes - they just work. Now, in the world of cinema, we’ve seen some great standalone work from actor and actresses, but it’s when the best of the best work as one that you can taste the magic in the air. And no, that’s not just your joint fumes - it’s the power of on-screen dynamic duos. Here’s the list of the greatest film partners (in no particular order) to watch while stoned. Grab a best friend, your significant other, or that senile old dog - there’s no reason to go in alone.
Shaggy & Scooby Doo - Scooby Doo (2002)
What better duo to watch than one who are most definitely blazed out of their minds at all times? This live-action version of Hanna Barbera’s mystery solving gang is fun for the whole family (I would know, I guilted my Dad to see it in theaters), and it’s even more fun when you’re laying back with your favorite strain. Pick one to relax and chill out with Shaggy and Scoob as the two travel around a spooky island to uncover why the young patrons seem to be acting a little off. And by off, I mean possessed by evil demonic creatures. And don’t think there aren’t multiple layers to peel from this Raja Gosnell-directed flick; even Shaggy manages to find a little love in the form of Isla Fisher’s character, Mary Jane. What a great name..
Munchie: Chocolate may be no good for dogs, but doesn’t mean we can't enjoy it with a little peanut butter.
Vincent & Jules - Pulp Fiction (1994)
The pairing of John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson for Quentin Tarantino’s second feature film is one that should not be missed. The suited up hitmen of this 1994 classic deliver some of the best lines in cinema history, with their undeniable chemistry radiating off the screen no matter where the nonlinear story takes us. You love ‘em and sympathize with ‘em, even when there’s ‘accidental’ bullets are flying. The two are just one of many reasons why Pulp Fiction was nominated for a whopping seven Oscars.
Munchie: A Royale with cheese may be unavailable, but a burger and fries will do.
Maura & Kate - Sisters (2015)
This isn’t the first time Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have joined up for a project, and it certainly won’t be the last. As regular players on SNL, hosts of several award shows, and co-stars in well-known comedy films, the two take the cake as some the funniest women in Hollywood. Their latest outing has them like the title states, who return to their childhood home to say goodbye, with hopes of throwing the big rager they never truly got to experience. As expected, debauchery ensues, cameos from other powerful ladies like Maya Rudolph and Kate McKinnon take form, and John Cena appears as the party’s drug dealer. Just your typical Friday night, right?
Munchie: Chips and dip in honor of the epic party you’re about to witness.
Jeremy & John - Wedding Crashers (2005)
Though it may be hard to relate to a pair of divorce mediators turned wedding crashers who will sleep with just about anything that moves, it’s the convincing on-screen relationship between Vaughn and Wilson that us the right way to be so, so wrong. The raunchy rom com follows the two throughout the nuptials of a lifetime where their list of ‘crashing’ rules don’t apply. Underneath the diarrhea jokes and under the table handjobs, Wedding Crashers actually makes for a charming movie about two bros just looking for true love - just not with eachother. That would be a different movie. *Munchie: Wine and cheese will be the only classy part of the night.
Han Solo & Chewbacca - Star Wars (1977)
In a galaxy, far, far away.. there was a man, his blaster, and a Wookiee. Han Solo, the co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon and hired help of Obi-Wan and Luke, is just one half of the greatest duo to ever bless cinema screens across the world. With Chewbacca, a hairy, non-English speaking species at his side, the two have traveled the depths of space, associating themselves as large presences of the Alliance and forming relationships with our heroes that continue on until the most recent Star Wars installment, The Force Awakens. As expected, nothing’s changed between Solo and the fuzzball.. aside from maybe a few wrinkles. Munchie: A classic that will stay golden no matter the year - milk and cookies.
