New York Fashion Week kicked off with an unoffical battle of the old guard vs the new.

On one side is legendary designer Tom Ford, who debuted his second film, Nocturnal Animals at the Venice Film Festival receiving a five-star review from The Guardian and emerging as an Oscar contender.

Then, we have Kanye West. Fresh off of his Saint Pablo tour, Yeezy made history at Madison Square Garden moving $740,000 worth of merchandise in a single night.

At NYFW, West and Ford boasted equally ambitious and iconic offerings in their own right, fighting for a piece of the fashion pie.

A Jay-Z favorite and red carpet staple, Ford re-opened the now closed and iconic Four Seasons Restaurant for a dinner theater fashion show with a star studded guest list.  In attendace was songstress Alicia Keys, supermodels Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford and Iman, actors Tom Hanks, Uma Thurman, Jon Hamm, Neil Patrick Harris, Julianne Moore, Rita Ora and Joel Edgerton and Vogue editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour.

Earlier in the day on a scorching afternoon, Kanye West shuttled bloggers and editors from Manhattan to Roosevelt Island to showcase his much anticipated (and dare we say poorly received) Yeezy Season 4 collection.  Sitting front row were the Kardashian/Jenner clan, rappers Tyga, Fabolous, 2 Chainz and Pusha T as well as actor Terrence Jenkins and film director Spike Jonez.

Both designers knew how to garner attention by pulling out all of the stops to get people talking, whether good or bad.  Kanye kicked off his media train by casting only "multiracial" women in his show.  Tom Ford on the other hand announced that his collection would be available for purchase the very next day.

MERRY JANE  highlights the moments that made this NYFW one for the books.
