Manolo’s “FTC Revisited” Tape Pays Homage to San Francisco Skateboarding

The deepest of West Coast roots.

by Rainey Cruz

Skateboard video remix king Manolo of Manolo’s Tapes is at it again with yet another beautifully executed composition of archival and unreleased skateboard footage. This time around the Italian editor collaborated with the renowned San Francisco-based skateboard shop and institution known as FTC, a staple in the Frisco scene since the mid ‘90s.

The tape, “FTC Revisited”, is 21+ minutes of mostly San Francisco street skateboarding and an incredible time capsule that highlights some of the most legendary names and spots to have come out of the ‘90s golden era of West Coast pushing. The list is truly a who’s who of legends that are now skateboard industry mavens with their own companies and brands. There’s Rick Howard and Mike Carroll of Girl, Jeron Wilson of Diamond, Karl Watson of Organika, Spencer Fujimoto of El Señor, Mike York of Roller Horror, Keith Hufnagel of HUF, among a slew of other icons like Henry Sanchez, Chico Brenes, Jeff Pang, Marcus McBride, Jovantae Turner, Bobby Puleo and way too many more to name. Iconic spots including EMB, Pier 7 and San Francisco’s notorious hills are all documented.

How Manolo manages to splice his remixes together so well—like it’s a brand new video with all the footage and songs seamlessly and meticulously synchronized—is a feat that truly boggles the mind. Tune selections like Lou Rawls’ “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” and De La Soul’s “I Am I Be” and Easy Mo Bee’s “Temptations” instrumental work incredibly well to highlight the essence of appreciation for the history of FTC.

All in all, “FTC Revisited” is comprehensive trip down memory lane to a period in skateboarding when flowing across the streets and piers, snagging line after line of tricks was the most well-earned form of respect and stripes.
