A taste of the alternative holiday spirit.
Published on November 20, 2016

Is it really about to be over? It seems like only a few months ago we were popping bottles and looking forward to what possibilities lay before us and how fabulous 2016 was going to be.

As the past 11 months fades into the rear-view, the year's end comes into view on the horizon, and with it comes the annual crop of holiday movies to usher us into the brave new era called 2017. Movies are nearly always a reflection of the times they are made in, but holiday movies have a tendency to sum up the year we've just had, and what a year it was, for better or worse. All things considered, probably for worse this year…

While this December’s announced release schedule doesn’t hold a torch to 2012, which gave us The Hobbit, a Cirque du Soleil movie, and the Christmas Day Django Unchained / Les Miserables double feature, there is still a film that promises to be a lot of fun.

This film will see two of the greatest actors of our generation together on the silver screen for the first time. An unlikely but unsurprising duo with countless awards between the two of them, including two Oscar nominations and five Emmy wins, will team up for an innovative testament to the modern tradition of holiday movies. The film, of course is Why Him? And the actors, of course, are James Franco and Bryan Cranston.

Just in time for awards season, the film will offer a high point to the year-end's releases, which include a low budget Star Wars bootleg and Assassin's Creed, a movie adapted from a video game. As we already know, those always go over so well. The absurdist comedy-drama is another entry into the cannon of high art put forth by both virtuoso actors. Cranston plays the doting patriarch of a nuclear family who have poured all their love into their daughter, a consummate daddy’s girl who falls in love with an outrageous “tech zillionaire” played by Franco.

From then on, it’s a 2016 version of Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, but this time with more "double-dicking" and moose testicles. As Franco “wraps his tentacles” around the family, pulling vile profanities out of the little brother and getting the mother sky high, Cranston resists, refusing to let his daughter marry such a callow man. The stage is then set for the battle of the century as the two acting titans face off.

The movie will give Franco room to explore his more outlandish comedy chops (after Pineapple Express and This Is The End we know he has them in him) and offer Cranston an opportunity to get back to the type of family comedy that made launched him to fame before the meth labs.

The Red Band trailer has just been released and you can watch it here.if you want to bust a gut laughing to end the year, or simply want to disgust your in-laws, Why Him? is the right holiday movie for you.
