This Heatmap Shows State-by-State Popularity of Weed-Related GIFs
As 4/20 draws near, “420” searches spike 134%.

To celebrate 4/20 this week, mobile GIF-sharing platform Tenor has provided a state-by-state heatmap of where weed-related GIF searches are most popular. The “Weed the People” map breaks down every pot-related image search the company has seen since the beginning of this year.

Unsurprisingly, weed images are most popular in states with legal weed like Oregon, Massachusetts, and Colorado. Vermont and New Hampshire, along with other New England and West Coast states, are not far behind. Weed-related GIFs are not terribly popular in southeastern states like Mississippi and Alabama, and Montana and Wyoming residents apparently have little to no interest in pot GIFs.

Not only did Tenor uncover which states are digging for dank memes, but they also break down which days of the week weed searches are most popular on. Pot-related GIF searches rise as the work week trudges along, peaking on Thursday before tapering off over the weekend. In contrast, beer-related GIF searches start the week at a very low level, rise to a huge peak on Friday, only to fall to their lowest levels during Sunday's inevitable hangover.

Tenor also revealed their top five most popular celebrity weed GIFs. Homer Simpson tops the list, followed by Snoop Dogg and Wiz Khalifa. Weed stalwarts Cheech and Chong take fourth place, and Doug Benson closes out the list with the fifth spot.

And as 4/20 draws near, Tenor has reported a spike in searches for “420,” up by 134%.
