Once celebrated as one of the most unique lo-fi indie rock groups to come out of ’90s-era California, Grandaddy has faded into obscurity over the last decade, leaving us all to cling onto nostalgic Nintendo-powered space rock hits like “A.M. 180”. But suddenly, out of the blue, the Jason Lytle-led band has just come out of hibernation to announce their first album in 10 years, which will be entitled Last Place.
The followup to their 2006 record Just Like the Fambly Cat will feature 12 new pop-infused rock tracks, including the recently released single “Way We Won’t”, which has just been given music video treatment by the Modesto-based band. The newest track showcases a return to form for the old school indie rockers, featuring their signature style of heavy riffs and poppy melodies.
The music video for “Way We Won’t” stars actor Jason Ritter (from NBC's “Parenthood”), who wanders disheveled down a desolate California road while attempting to hitchhike. After a number of cars (and a Segway) speed by and mock him, Ritter’s character loses all hope in finding a ride. But suddenly, a dashing redheaded woman in a red vehicle comes to pick the wandering man up, making for an unexpected and explosive ending.
If “Way We Won’t” is any indication of how the album Last Place will sound, you can expect nothing less than heavy guitars riffs and catchy space-infused pop. Their latest album is set to be released on March 3 via Danger Mouse’s 30th Century Records. As the scenic album artwork seems to reveal, you can expect Grandaddy to make a triumphant return to their rightful throne of ‘90s West Coast weirdo indie rock.
