David Lynch and Mark Frost’s cult classic Twin Peaks returned for two glorious hours on Showtime last night, weirder and darker than ever before. The limited series reboot bore little resemblance to the original, both in tone and location, as its disjointed slow pace and multiple scenes around the country sharply contrasted with the original’s small-town soap opera vibe. There were a few hallmarks of the show’s early ‘90s beginnings though-- familiar faces from the original cast popped up throughout, we spent some time in the iconic Black Lodge, and the show concluded with a spacey dream pop performance in a bar.

Singer and Angelo Badalamenti collaborator Julee Cruise popped up a couple of times in the original show, singing at the Roadhouse Bar during some crucial scenes, and this time around it’s Johnny Jewel and his band Chromatics taking her place at the newly-christened Bang Bang Bar. They closed out last night’s episode with a performance of “Shadow,” a track they originally released as part of Adult Swim’s summer 2015 singles program in their eventually scrapped rollout of their (still upcoming?) album Dear Tommy.

Today the band released a video of the updated version of “Shadow” they performed on the show, and all in all, it’s very similar to the scene in which they appeared last night. The band members flaunt in front of a red curtain (a frequently-recurring image in the show) and perform instruments that don’t appear on the actual song, which was also interestingly the case in Cruise’s performances on the show. There’s something very comforting, in the Lynchiest version of the word, about seeing another band 25 years down the line feign strumming guitars while actually performing synthpop. Only on Twin Peaks does cognitive dissonance produce such warm and fuzzy feelings.
