It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Bryan Cranston as Walter White, whose stranglehold on Emmy wins for his role as a science teacher turned meth cook on Breaking Bad ended when the series did. Since then, he’s finally been recognized for the amazing actor that he is (he was criminally underrated as the neurotically hilarious Hal in Malcolm in the Middle) and has yet to play the same or similar role. That is, until last night.
As part of Saturday Night Live’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” last night, Bryan Cranston once again jumped into the role, but this time just for laughs. He joined Kate McKinnon as Kellyanne Conway in a skit in which she announces that Walter White has just been tapped to head the DEA.
In the skit, he claims to have been hiding in the Breitbart News comments all along, until Steve Bannon tracked him down to offer him the job. “Trust me, I know the DEA better than anyone, inside and out,” he said, also adding “Donald Trump and I agree, it’s to make America cook again.”
While our petulant President Elect has yet to tweet a storm about SNL’s jab at the little cabinet of horrors he is assembling, we won’t be surprised if he unleashes a digital tantrum in the coming days. While a meth supplier becoming the head of the DEA is a stretch even by the lunatic standards of the oncoming administration, where qualifications and experience seem to matter very little, it does fall in line with Trump’s pattern of appointing offices to men and women whose goal it is to subvert them.
All seriousness aside, enjoy Walter White in all his glory here.
