Anyone can dress up like Cheech and Chong or put a flowerpot on their head, but the truly original will be rewarded with more treats than tricks this Halloween. It’s an exciting time for weed, after all, and cannabis culture offers a wealth of fresh ideas. It’s time to get creative.
Inspired by Science
Now that cannabis has come above ground, we’re using science and research to unlock the amazing capabilities of the endocannabinoid system, cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids, while learning new ways to synthesize and extract cannabis in the forms of shatter, crumble, butter, wax, and oil.
Raphael Mechoulam, pictured here in the 1964 documentary The Scientist, is an Israeli organic chemist, professor of medicinal chemistry, and pioneer of global cannabis research. Honor his work, and the work of his peers and predecessors, by dressing up as an extraction technician or scientist. All you need is a lab coat and a THC or CBD molecule necklace, or molecule T-shirt. Go the extra mile by making a sheet of fake shatter out of sugar glass, using this how-to video as your guide.
Inspired by Strains
Last year, the clever folks at Leafly exercised their creativity and created a fun photo shoot with helpful tutorials, breaking down what you’ll need to dress up as your favorite strain. Pictured above is Granddaddy Purple, Super Lemon Haze, and White Widow. Some other strains to entertain are Space Queen, Agent Orange, Strawberry Cough, Grape Ape, Girl Scout Cookies, Headband, Harlequin, Northern Lights, Cheese, Gorilla Glue #4, Animal Cookies, Obama Kush, Super Skunk, and 9 Pound Hammer. This concept can be especially fun for groups.
Inspired by Slang
The Office of National Drug Policy Control compiled a comprehensive list of street terms for drugs, including hundreds for cannabis. Embrace our culture’s colorful canna-lingo by dressing up as your favorite slang. Pop princesses Lady Gaga and Rihanna have both dressed as the “Green Goddess” for Halloween, seen above. Use a few layers of green tulle and a pair of Satan’s horns to become “The Devil’s Lettuce.” “Rainy Day Woman” is a term on the list taken from the title of a Bob Dylan song. You can represent by sporting an umbrella, rain slicker, duck boots, and a tee with the lyrics “Everybody Must Get Stoned” screen-printed on it. Be a “Christmas Tree,” “Puff the Magic Dragon,” “Zig Zag Man,” or Alice B. Toklas carrying a tray of pot brownies.
Inspired by Movies
There’s no shortage of stoner movies for you to choose from when deciding who to mimic this Halloween. Dress up as the bong-wielding teddy bear from Ted 2. Disguise yourself as the drug-dealing, space-cake-making grandma from the French film Paulette. Find two friends and three tacky Christmas sweaters to go as Isaac, Ethan, and Chris from The Night Before. Characters from Super Troopers or Half Baked make an amusing group costume. Party hop dressed as Smokey and Craig from Friday. Whomever you become, be sure to memorize a few key lines from your film of choice and use them generously throughout the night.
Inspired by Celebrities
They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Last year, singer Tinashe dressed up as Snoop Dogg for Heidi Klum’s 16th Annual Halloween Party in New York City, accessorizing her costume with gold chains and a drawn-on beard, while clutching a giant joint and donning his signature braids. Why not show reverence for your favorite cannabis-loving celebrity? Consider dressing up as Uncle Snoop, Wiz Khalifa, Die Antwoord, Miley Cyrus, Julian Marley, Brad Pitt, Justin Bieber, Bill Clinton, Miley Cyrus, Whoopi Goldberg, Rihanna, Willie Nelson, Lady Gaga, or Montel “Chilliams” Williams.
