In 2014, lo-fi enigma Ariel Pink ditched his backing band, Haunted Graffiti, and released pom pom. In this writer’s opinion, the album leveled up Pink’s weirdo stylings, taking him from crystalline songwriter behind a wall of reverb and fuzz to a full-on Zappa-esque figure, able to let his eclectic freak impulses fly via wildly varied genre experiments and trippy instrumental workouts.

Today, the L.A. mainstay has announced his follow-up, which is also billed as a solo album (note: pom pom still had a ton of guest musicians and songwriters). Its title is Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, and according to an accompanying press release, the titular Bobby was actually very much a real person. Here’s Mr. Pink explaining why he dedicated the album to Jameson:

“The new release’s title makes a direct and heartfelt reference to a real-life Los Angeles musician, long presumed dead, who resurfaced online in 2007 after 35 reclusive years to pen his autobiography and tragic life story in a series of blogs and YouTube tirades. His book and life resonated with me to such a degree that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.”

For some context, here’s what appears to be Jameson’s most popular song, 1966’s “Vietnam,” and here’s a 2011 video of him complaining about “this pisshole called the Internet.” We don’t yet know exactly how Jameson will factor into the album’s overarching themes, but today we did get our first taste of its music. 

Single “Another Weekend,” a relaxed, strum-heavy cut that oscillates between standard 4/4 and a dreamy waltz tempo, sounds like a return to Pink’s pre-pom pom haze in the best way possible. After all, you can only have so many bad trips a la “Dinosaur Carebears” until you crave a return to your comfort zone.

The video, directed by the fabulous Grant Singer, finds Pink in a vaquero bar in L.A., dressed to match the scene behind him. In the sense that Pink’s performing in a creepy, red-curtained bar, and backed by a band playing instruments that don’t actually appear in the song. “Another Weekend” basically resembles a Twin Peaks closing scene if the show happened to be set in East L.A.
