In today’s popular culture, most of our weed-themed music comes from either rappers or jam bands, with little in between. And while everyone knows that Willie Nelson can go blunt-for-blunt with Snoop Dogg, these days we generally associate country music with Jack Daniels and Budweiser as opposed to Jack Herer and budtenders. But that doesn’t mean country musicians don’t love getting stoned just as much as the rest of us, case in point, Toby Keith’s new single “Wacky Tobaccy,” a love letter to the wide world of weed.
The video, released earlier this week, is Keith’s first single since last year, and features a tour bus full of good-ol’-boys playing acoustic guitars and banging on pots and pans while Toby sings about everything from baking brownies to Humboldt county and Toby’s favorite strain, "red-haired sensimilla."
Basically it looks like someone’s uncle found their nephew’s stash and called over his high school buddies to jam in the Winnebago. The song is downright goofy, but it’s undeniably catchy, and, frankly comes with some good advice. “Homegrown is healthy/but synthetic can kill ya” Keith sings.
Of course, not one to miss out on some country cannabis fun, Willie Nelson emerges from the tour bus bathroom with a lit joint during the song’s main guitar solo to sit in and smoke with the crew.
As for the country purists, there’s still at least one reference to beer, even if it has nothing to do with drinking - “Burn it through a hole in a can of Budweiser/if you can’t take the heat son...vaporizer!”
The video ends as the munchies take hold and the band stops jamming to enjoy a pizza party - a much better result than the end of Toby’s last ganja-themed song, “Weed with Willie,” where Keith ends up in the fetal position, too stoned off Willie’s top-shelf stash. We're guessing Toby brought his own bud this time.
