How fantastic is this new Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire EP? We already wrote at length about Brainiac, as it’s titled, upon its release last month, but since then it’s only grown on us. The project is brief, clocking in at just six tracks and 22 minutes, but that’s more than enough time for eXquire to run the complete gamut of emotions, sounds, and vibes. He largely focuses on depression, alcoholism, and inner confusion, as on cuts like “Lost in the Sauce” and “Manboy,” but there’s also room for plenty of his delightfully skewed sense of humor too. Today, the EP track containing the most of that, the Meyhem Lauren-assisted “Bebop and Rocksteady,” has gotten a pitch-perfect video to compliment it.
In the video, both NYC rappers take a trip down to Miami to kick it in the city’s legendary Little Havana neighborhood. Not content to just pop in seeming like out-of-towners, eX and Meyhem dress in pastels to match the scenery, rent Vespas, and even collaborate with some elderly locals for the video. The whole thing is very bright and color-coordinated, especially the denim jacket worn by eXquire that bears the message, “Too hood for the nerds, too weird for the thugs.”
Over the jazzy, piano-led CONSTROBUZ beat, both guys let loose on some verbal escapades, keeping it light and loose while still locked-in on a definite groove. Meyhem Lauren basically nails the whole vibe of the song with his line, “Fuck being stuck in a box, I think spaciously.” You’d be hard-pressed to find two rappers who sound like they’re having more fun.
