A Shower Tale

This past Friday, Jack White and his label Third Man Records released Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016, which as the title suggests is indeed a collections of acoustic recordings from that time period. It contains B-sides, remixes, alternate versions, and previously unreleased tracks, arranged in chronological order. It includes cuts by The White Stripes, of which “City Lights” is the first newly released White Stripes song since 2008.

Today, Third Man Records has shared the video for “City Lights,” which they claim was directed by Michel Gondry and presented to them as a surprise from the critically and popularly acclaimed French film and music video director. This isn’t the first time that they have worked together, as Gondry has directed a plentiful amount of videos for The White Stripes, such as “Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground,” “Fell In Love With A Girl,” “The Hardest Button To Button,” and “The Denial Twist.”

The video itself is charmingly simple, as a man in the shower, hidden by the steam, traces objects and shapes on the glass door, pictorially interpreting the lyrics to the acoustic ballad. It’s calm and perfectly channels the vibe of the song.

Watch the video here and try recreating it next time you need a hot shower.
