August is going to be a big month for the A$AP Mob. During the month they’ve dubbed AWGEST, after A$AP Rocky’s creative agency, AWGE, we’ll see release from A$APs Twelvyy and Ferg, as well as a sequel to last fall’s Cozy Tapes Vol. 1. Twelvyy’s debut album, 12, arrived last night, featuring appearances from Onyx’s Fredro Starr, Joey Bada$$, Flatbush Zombies, and more. Today, Ferg’s giving us a taste of what to expect from Still Striving, the mixtape that’ll serve as his contribution to the crew’s wild month of releases.
Back in April, Ferg dropped “East Coast,” a standalone single that featured Remy Ma, fresh off of her successful beef with Nicki Minaj. No shots at all at Remy, but for the remix, Ferg’s returned with an even more formidable squad of East Coast All-Stars. Three more New Yorkers, one Miami kingpin, and even a West Coast O.G. make the cut.
Busta Rhymes, one of two venerated legends on the remix, is up first, claiming that he’s only got 41 seconds and then making the most of it by delivering just the sort of motor-mouthed verse we’ve come to expect from the NYC empresario. Pushing on, Ferg references Playboi Carti’s mega-hit “Magnolia,” Rocky oddly enough shouts out blog rap bygones Chiddy Bang, and fellow Harlemite Dave East says that he’s “Paulie McCartney rocking Moschino.” All three of the younger artists do more than hold their own.
Former Maybach Music affiliates (but still frequent collaborators) French Montana and Rick Ross are up next, and this is where things start to lag a bit. There are funny moments, like when the molasses-paced French lashes out at other rappers “talking fast like Bone Thugs-N-Harmony,” or when Rozay offers to whip us up a bloody mary, but overall, the MMG and Bad Boy verses don’t feel that essential.
But then, what’s this - a wild West Coaster appears?! Snoop Dogg, who is technically from the east (side of Long Beach), caps off the track with one of his more unique flows, proving that the Doggfather is never out of place, even on a posse cut that probably would’ve thrown shade at him or Dr. Dre had it been released 25 years prior.
Still Striving arrives on August 18th, and Cozy Tapes Vol. 2: Too Cozy is set to drop one week later on August 25th. Until then, enjoy Twelvyy’s album and this marathon-length A$AP Ferg remix.
