This particular batch seems to stimulate your appetite like no other. The temptation to heat up last night’s pizza delivery or to make a run for one of your go-to fast food munchies is strong, but you’re trying to get fit and stay healthy, because you know balance is the key to harmony. To satisfy your hunger and show your body love, feast on these five delicious and nutritious snacks.


Few things in life are as soothing as the sweet citrusy aroma of a freshly-peeled orange. Pickling involves a fermentation process like the creation of yogurt, wine, and beer. During the fermentation of fresh, miniature, crunchy cucumbers, a brine of healthy probiotic bacteria is created which helps replenish our body’s flora. This process is totally natural and it’s a tradition revered by civilizations all over the world. It’s believed we absolutely need fermented foods and the healthy probiotics created by the fermentation process to fully thrive.

The next time you’re out buying some dills, look for a brand that’s “raw,” meaning unpasteurized, as the heating processes used in all types of pasteurization can kill many of the beneficial probiotics. Raw sauerkrauts also use a fermentation process involving all manners of vegetables, from cabbage to brussel sprouts and beyond, and they make a great substitution if cucumbers aren’t your thing. Botanically, coconuts are a drupe—not a nut, but a type of stone-fruit. The fleshy insides can be scooped out for a salubrious snack full of healthy vitamins and minerals. Also known as the alligator pear because of its alligator-like skin and its pear-like shape, the avocado is a species of fruit which, biologically, most closely resembles a large berry. And they’re berry awesome. Mostly comprised of monounsaturated fat, the avocado is good fat, has a creamy consistency and is both filling and incredibly healthy. Eating one or two is a fantastic option for post-sesh hunger. Avocados leave you satisfied and well-nourished. They’re also great in smoothies or over a bowl of freshly steamed rice.
