You know what’s hot in legal cannabis states? Cannabis. You know what’s hot in non-legal states? Also cannabis. The MJ craze has everyone in a stir these days, cocktails included. Remember the Long Island Ice Tea, the Buttery Nipple, the Lemon Drop, and the Zombie? From girls-night-out shots to a Tiki drink (with two straws) romance, people across the country are slinging new cannabis-inspired beverages as an homage to the Green Dragon. Find out below what they are and how to order them. And, even better, how to make your own at home. Since most bars can’t serve real cannabis, we’ve included a quick how-to for infusing some extra green “goodness” into your libation.
What’s in it: Rum, some more rum, and the dignity you’re about to swallow
What it looks like: Adult beverage version of a Hi-C Ecto-Cooler
What it tastes like: Same—a little sweet, a little tart
How to order it at a bar: Either line ’em up as shots across the bar for you and friends, or order one on the rocks in a highball glass with a lime or cherry for garnish.
½ oz. spiced rum
½ oz. coconut rum
½ oz. blue curaçao liqueur
½ oz. melon liqueur
3 oz. pineapple juice
Splash of sweet-and-sour mixer
Directions: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes and add each ingredient. Shake well and strain into 4 shot glasses or one highball glass filled with ice. Having a big party? Prepare a few gallons ahead of time and serve in a punch bowl.
Elevate it: It’s all about the strains. Make it a Liquid Marijuana “Golden Pineapple” by adding a splash of Galliano and a pineapple for garnish. Or make it a “Strawberry Cough” by adding a float of 151 and strawberries for garnish. Take it even further by making fresh sweet-and-sour mix using simple syrup and fresh lemons and limes. Better yet, use a drop of your favorite fresh terpenes to play the strain game.
Sugar Marijuana Goblet
What’s in it: Fake smoke, possibly goblins
What it looks like: Something Yoda would serve you at one of his infamous treehouse parties
What it tastes like: You won’t remember
How to order it at a bar: Don’t, unless it’s on the menu somewhere
2 ½ oz. 190 proof grain alcohol (Everclear or similar)
1 ½ oz. melon liqueur
1 ½ oz. spiced rum
1 ½ oz. coconut rum
3 oz. blue curaçao liqueur
3 oz. sweet-and-sour mixer
3 oz. pineapple juice
1 large orange, sliced
Dry ice, cubed
Directions: Mix all ingredients together into a large measuring cup. Prepare a large goblet by adding a few cubes of dry ice (usually available at grocery stores) and some standard ice cubes to the bottom. Arrange several orange slices around the insides of the goblet. Pour the mixture from the measuring cup into the goblet over the dry ice. Add lollipops for garnish and enjoy.
Elevate it: Use medicated lollipops!
What’s in it: No marijuana, no ice cream, just melon and milk with little bit of shake
What it looks like: A green White Russian
What it tastes like: Melted lime sherbert, green tea ice cream, and booze on the front, deep chocolate on the finish
How to order it at a bar: Carefully, when it’s not too crowded. Some bartenders might think you’re crazy and you’ll have to walk them through it.
1 oz. melon liqueur
½ oz. white crème de cocoa
½ oz. milk
Directions: Pour ingredients into cocktail shaker over ice and shake well. Strain into two shots or over ice in a rocks glass. Then, go roll some ten-pin.
Elevate it: Instead of milk, go “Full Jane” and blend the melon liqueur and crème de cocoa with one ounce of fresh coconut in a high-speed blender. This way, the fatty acids in coconut oils can make the cannabinoids from any cannabis you add more bio-available. A dash of kush makes everything, well, nice.
