Francesco Niembro was born with a rare life-threatening disorder called CFC Syndrome (Cardio-Facio-Cutaneous). He is one of around 450 people in the world who was born with the genetic condition that affects the heart, facial features, and skin. Those affected may also suffer from gastrointestinal problems, growth deficiencies, and neurological problems such as seizures and cognitive impairment.
Francesco’s mother, Maria, says CBD has been the most effective treatment of her son’s condition. She told CityNews in Toronto, “He used to get seizures 2-10 times a day. Since taking the cannabis oil, he has gone days without seizures. He still has some but not like before.”
In recent years, CBD use has become more prevalent, with patients and parents using the cannabis derivative to treat epileptic seizures, kill cancer cells, reduce nausea, act as an antianxiety agent, antidepressant, provide relief from multiple sclerosis, treat schizophrenia and post-traumatic stress disorder.
Still, the nurses at the SickKids Hospital in Canada have refused to treat Francesco with Cannabidiol, regardless of the fact her son’s prescription is legal in Canada.
Although the hospital cannot comment on a specific patient, it issued a statement saying there is not enough high-quality research in the administration of cannabinoid oil.
Whatever the hospital’s definition of high-quality research is, specific cases of cannabis use in children have been widely reported. The Ryan family in California saw vast improvement in their 8-month-old’s cancer growth by using cannabis.
MERRY JANE’s Mother Knows Best column heard from a mom back in June who uses concentrates to treat her son who suffers from a rare blood disorder and lives in pain for days at a time and was introduced to cannabis before his first birthday.
SickKids hospital does support parents who choose to administer the oil themselves, as Maria does twice a day. As a single parent who works full time, Maria needs to ride the subway one hour each way in order to give her son enough dosage and he still wakes up 3 to 4 times a night.
“And that’s not even when he has seizures. I need to be with him 24 hours a day.”
Maria will continue to do her best in order to provide the care that has been proven to ease her son’s suffering. Hopefully the hospital will make the right decision to administer the prescription CBD oil to Francesco and realize the extreme benefits and little harm of CBD on ailing children.
