Gorillaz Finally Return with Popcaan-Assisted Short Film “Saturnz Barz (Spirit House)”

This is not a drill.

This is not a drill. 20 days after Plastic Beach turned seven year old, the Damon Albarn-helmed animated group Gorillaz have returned with an album announcement and a new video.

Humanz will be out on April 28th, and it will feature Vince Staples, De La Soul, Danny Brown, D.R.A.M., Pusha T, and many, many more. For now, feast on a short video that contains the entirety of the Popcaan-assisted album cut “Saturnz Barz,” as well as snippets of a few more tracks.

Subtitled “Spirit House,” the video shows band members 2D, Murdoc, Russel, and Noodle entering what is very clearly a haunted house and stumbling upon demons that transport them to the outer ring of Saturn. You know, your typical Gorillaz video.

Popcaan, whose lyrics are lip-synced by said demons, leads the charge on “Saturnz Barz” (which begins at the 2:24 mark, if you’re too impatient to wait). He attacks a harsh, staticky beat with tales of his rough Kingston upbringing, which required him to pack heat and become a “killer just like Rodney Price.”

Albarn only make his appearance in the song’s more forlorn outro, his heavily-filtered voice soundtracking 2D’s nude reinterpretation of 2001: A Space Odyssey’s trippiest scene. “With the holograms inside of me, I’ll dance alone tonight,” Albarn sings cryptically, adding to the fictionalized band’s mythology and (probably) touching upon some themes that will come to define Humanz.

Gorillaz will debut Humanz live in London tomorrow night. Today, they also shared album tracks “Andromeda” featuring D.R.A.M., “Ascension” featuring Vince Staples,” and “We’ve Got the Power” featuring Savages’ Jehnny Beth, so we’ve already got quite a substantial chunk of the album with which to get acquainted.
