Last week, the leading names of the Canadian cannabis industry turned out to celebrate the impending recreational legalization of marijuana during the fourth annual Canadian Cannabis Awards, but marking the first time the awards were held in-person rather than online. The event, held by Lift, a leading innovator and online marketplace for Canadian medical cannabis, presented 75 awards to dispensaries, products, producers, testing labs, and more. The event was held at the Carlu at College Park in Toronto, and featured cocktails, dinner, snacks, and performances, including some high comedy from stand-up stars The Lucas Brothers of 22 Jump Street.

The awards ceremony was designed “to be a mini Oscars” of the cannabis industry, organizer Matei Olaru told the Toronto Star. The awards covered nearly every conceivable category of the Canadian marijuana sector, including canna-businesses and their products, social media influencers, charitable institutions, cannabis chefs, activists, and politicians. “These are recognizable names excited to be associated publicly with the industry,” he added. “The industry has matured enough and there are enough players, so it’s the right time for this.”

Medical cannabis companies all across the country were well-represented, receiving awards for edibles, flowers, extracts, branding, and dispensaries. Canopy Growth Corporation won the Top Charitable Initiative, and also won Deal of the Year for their acquisition of Mettrum. Wheaton Income, a new firm providing financial solutions to the cannabis industry, won Startup of the Year. Medical cannabis producer Aurora was another big winner, receiving first-place awards for top Facebook account and top high-THC oil, and 2nd place for the top high-CBD oil.
