As a rookie smoker years ago I probably couldn’t tell what type of strain I was smoking based on its smoke, appearance, or smell but with time I was able to determine the effects of the strains I obtained. The differences in strain appearance were always vivid with almost all strains showing plenty of sticky resin but the smell would always differ. It wasn’t until about a few years down into smoking medical marijuana I was able to tell the difference between sativa and indica strains. Also, with the introduction of “hybrid strains” the possibilities of effects are almost endless. So to make your lives easier, we put together a small guide to how you can tell the difference between the strains you're smoking:
Normally sativas will grow taller than indica strains and originated in areas around the equator in countries such as Colombia and Thailand to name a few. Most sativa strains offer an uplifting and creative high while allowing smokers to be productive throughout the day if necessary. The euphoric feeling that exists within most sativa strains combined with the fruity like tones makes strains like Marley Natural Gold a sought after strain amongst cannabis connoisseurs. If you’re looking for something to replace your coffee then sativa strains are the way to go.
In recent years’ cultivators have been putting efforts into crossing strains to get the benefits from both the sativa and indica plants. These strains can range anywhere from a percentage of each (Sativa/Indica), in some cases fifty-fifty, where the strain can offer balanced benefits from each strain. In most cases, smokers will have to gradually work their way into these strains unless one leans towards sativa or indica directly to feel the effects of each. Strains that fit this description are AK-47 and Purple Alien OG, both offer a combination of relaxation and happiness.
The effects strains offer can differ based on the person, as well. While OG Kush may give me a stoney-couch-lock high some consumers will feel the euphoric and uplifting need to go out and be productive. Mentioned above indica strains tend to grow shorter and can be found in higher regions such as Afghanistan and Morocco. Indica strains offer a more “couch lock” feel as many probably have heard but offers many medical benefits for those suffering from pain. Most indica smokers will find that smoking an indica will allow them to unwind after a day’s work. The smell can be fruity at times, but will mainly be a skunky and piney smell that can be very pungent. Strains like Afghani Kush and Grand Daddy Purple offer a great relaxing effect that will allow consumers to mellow out.
