From training budtenders and helping patients at top Portland dispensary Farma and educating students at Sativa Science Club events, to dispelling marijuana myths for Teen Vogue, Emma Chasen is on a mission to share the science behind cannabis with everyone she meets. Her hope is to inspire us all to strengthen our relationship with the plant while taking charge of our own healing, one nugget of knowledge at a time.

Armed with a degree in Medicinal Plant Research from Brown University combined with plenty of first-hand experience with the cannabis plant, Chasen has proven herself to be one of the youngest and brightest minds in the holistic wellness industry today. When Chasen's not consulting, teaching, or writing about cannabis, you'll find her whipping up tasty infused treats with a little help from her handy MagicalButter machine.

Recently, she and her partner, a lawyer and cookie aficionado, joined forces to create a delicious confection that delivers anxiety relieving properties utilizing the power of medicinal herbs, exclusively for MERRY JANE. The result? Lavender Sea-Salt CBD Cookies.

"The texture of the cookie is perfect, just slightly crunchy on the outside and gooey on the inside," says Chasen, eloquently describing their joint creation. "The vanilla pudding mix really helps achieve that."

Chasen and her partner like using high CBD flower in this recipe because it generally has more myrcene, a compound and monoterpene found in hops, mangoes, and lemongrass. As a result, "the cannabis taste that comes through is slightly sweet with a lingering deep earthiness," says Chasen.

The lavender complements nicely with a touch of sweet floral freshness, balancing out the earthy notes from the CBD flower while the sea-salt and chocolate chips play off each other to give a sweet, slightly bitter, and salty sensation. "The trifecta sets the taste buds on fire," she says. We're drooling.

Recipe for Lavender Sea-Salt CBD Cookies
By Emma Chasen

1/4 oz CBD-dominant cannabis flower
1 cup lavender
1 cup softened butter
2 1/4 cups flour
1 package instant vanilla pudding mix
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
3 tsp. vanilla extract
2 eggs
10 oz dark chocolate chips
Coarse sea-salt for dusting

Preheat oven to 245 degrees Fahrenheit. Place the cannabis flower on a baking sheet and bake for 90 minutes. Once the cannabis has been decarboxylated, place the cannabis flower, lavender, and butter in the MagicalButter machine. Set the machine to "Butter" and allow it to infuse. Once it's finished, strain your butter. Set aside to cool.

Then, preheat oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit. Stir flour and pudding mix with baking soda and salt. Set aside. Beat cannabis butter with white sugar and brown sugar until creamy. Add vanilla and eggs, one at a time, until incorporated. Gradually blend dry mixture into creamed mixture. Stir in chocolate chips.

Place mixture into fridge to cool for an hour before baking. Bake for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Remove from oven and dust lightly with sea-salt to taste. Serve warm and gooey.

The Effect:

The combined effects of lavender and CBD flower should give a potent body relaxation while also delivering a nice euphoric boost. These cookies are great to combat stress, anxiety, muscle tension, and pain. But, if too much is eaten, you may feel sluggishness.

Emma's Pro Tip:

Like with any edible, know your dose! Start with half of a cookie. Then, see how it makes you feel after two hours. You can always eat more. I tend to enjoy my cookies at home in the evening, relaxing with friends after a long day.
